Micron Technology (MU) Announces 7400 SSD with NVMe Delivering PCIe Gen4 Performance for Data Centers

Micron Technology, Inc., (Nasdaq: MU) today announced the availability of the Micron® 7400 SSD with NVMe ™, delivering industry-leading form factor flexibility, PCIe Gen4 performance and industry-leading security to meet the needs data center storage demanding workloads. With this portfolio, Micron offers the widest selection of consumer data center SSDs available.1 Featuring seven form factors, the Micron 7400 SSD enables the transition to next-generation server architectures.

Data centers continue to evolve with rapid data growth and the proliferation of high performance applications. The need to process, analyze and secure the data that provides valuable information is fueling data center modernization, requiring new levels of storage innovation.

Large SSD portfolio for the data center
The increased performance and widespread adoption of SSDs in data centers requires new optimized form factors to meet data-centric workload needs. These form factors provide fast, reliable, and affordable data center storage in a range of use cases. The Micron 7400 SSD includes the only 22x80mm PCIe Gen4 M.2 with power failure protection, as well as 2.5-inch U.3 data center SSDs in 15mm and 7mm thicknesses.2 It also offers three different sizes of the new E1.S Enterprise and Data Center (EDSFF) SSD form factor, allowing for higher density, flash-optimized performance, and improved power and cooling options.3 This range of options means customers can move from traditional servers to dense EDSFF server designs with a single SSD. Offering a wide capacity range of 400GB to 7.68TB, the wallet supports low to high capacity applications.4 It also has endurance options for one and three disk writes per day to support read and write intensive applications.5 The SSD leverages all of Micron’s vertical integration capabilities to deliver cutting-edge innovation, from controller, firmware and advanced NAND and DRAM technology, to world-class front-end and back-end manufacturing.

PCIe Gen4 performance that evolves
The Micron 7400 SSD more than doubles IOPS per watt and throughput compared to the previous generation.6 Backward compatibility with PCIe Gen3 systems makes it easy for customers to transition from Gen3 platforms to Gen4. The drive supports 128 namespaces to increase the scalability of virtualized environments such as hyperconverged infrastructure and software-defined storage.7 It also supports Open Compute Project (OCP) deployments for qualified environments.8 OCP has developed and published specifications that have built a thriving ecosystem, creating a standardized approach that helps reduce integration complexity and accelerate time to market.

Security with hardware-based performance
Building on years of in-house security expertise, the Micron 7400 SSD offers proven features based on standards such as TCG-Opal 2.01 and IEEE-1667, as well as new features for in-flight data protection and at rest. These improvements help meet emerging needs as organizations increasingly seek better solutions to secure data in on-premises and cloud environments. Micron developed the Secure Execution Environment (SEE) to isolate and process security transactions to extend protection against an ever-changing set of threat models. SEE dramatically improves the security of data at rest through the use of dedicated memory, secure code and security microprocessor.
